Mirena Coil Fitting

  • From: £245

A Mirena is a small, plastic T-shaped device that is inserted into your womb (uterus). It contains a hormone called levonorgestrel (which is a type of progesterone). The hormone is slowly released into your womb and works to keep the lining of your womb healthy and thin, reducing any effects of thickening that taking oestrogen can cause. The Mirena is also a very effective contraceptive and can stay in place for up to five years. It can also help with heavy, painful periods.

The Mirena coil is fitted easily by Dr. Alison Elsey, using a speculum similar to that used when you have cervical screening. We need to ensure that there is no risk of pregnancy before we fit the Mirena. We want to involve you in decisions about your care and treatment, upon booking a Mirena fitting, you will be given more information and asked to sign a consent form.

Most women do not feel any pain when having a Mirena coil inserted. You may feel ‘period-like’ discomfort during, and after the fitting. When you leave the clinic, you can return to your normal activity. You may experience some bleeding, which is normal. If you have period pains, you can take your usual painkillers, such as paracetamol or ibuprofen. Most women do not need a follow up appointment. However, if you would like a review appointment to have your Mirena checked, you can book this too.
